Women all over South Africa are channelling their inner Lillian Ngoyi and Mam’Winnie today as we don our red and black and take to the streets against gender-based violence. The march is a women’s only one that sees women protesting against the war on women’s bodies in terms of any form of abuse.
Social media hashtag #TheTotalShutdown is trending in South Africa today, and here are some of the best tweets.
The disrespect and patronising begins when we as men say we should “ALLOW” women to have their #TotalShutDown march without us. Who are we as men to “ALLOW” women? Is it up to us to “ALLOW” them? Isn’t it their freedom to reject us? @mararamoabelo @Powerfm987

Wake me up when #WomensMonth ends. I can’t cope with another August of “win a pink Isuzu” or “no-guys-allowed movies”. Or upside down McDonald arches. Or Burger “Queen” specials. How about you just pay us the same, k?
